DOROTHY BLACKHAM, (IRISH 1896 – 1975) "IN THE GLEN", pastel on paper, signed lower left, artist's and framer's labels verso, 8.5" x 7.5" approx drawing, 14.5" x 11.75" approx frame Born in Dublin, Dorothy Blackham (who later became Dorothy Stewart) entered the RHA Schools during the First World War and later studied at the Goldsmith's College in London. She is associated with the Yeats sisters, Elizabeth and Lily, and contributed linocuts for their Cuala Press productions. Blackham was a prolific artist, exhibiting and contributing throughout Ireland & England from 1916 onwards. Exhibiting regularly with the RHA, her work was also being shown by the Ulster Society of Women Artists, The Watercolour Society of Ireland, and the Arts & Crafts Society of Ireland. Her friend, and fellow artist, Mainie Jellett was a significant influence on Blackham. Through Jellett, she became interested in The White Stag Group and exhibited with them four times between 1940 and 1941. She was a member of the Dublin Painter’s Society, exhibiting with them in the late 1930s. As well as being an active artist, she taught in a number of Dublin schools. She married Elsner Stewart in 1947, and the couple moved to London. Whilst there, Blackham continued her career as a teacher, and exhibited under her maiden name. She was exhibited by the Royal Academy of Arts, The Royal West of England Academy, The United Society of Artists, and the Royal Society of British Artists. Her work generally drew on Ireland for inspiration, in particular the north and west of the country, she also created works based on scenes in London and continental Europe.

Her work is mainly created through the medium of acrylic. TOM BYRNE, (Irish, b. 1962), "MOON RISING OVER THE COPPER COAST", mixed media on canvas, signed lower centre, Apollo Gallery stamp verso, 30" x 20.5" approx canvas, Tom Byrne was born in Dublin in 1962. He studied at Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design, where he trained in the Bauhaus tradition, a revolutionary 20th century school of artistic training which integrated craftsmanship, art and technology. He has forged a strong following through the decades since he left Dun Laoghaire and has a strong following amongst buyers of Irish contemporary art. The artist has been known to say that religion, politics & celebrity, all play important roles in his work. He has a strong interest in current affairs, but also draws inspiration from the everyday. He uses layers and mixed media to create works that have a great depth to them, which help to engage the viewer in what is a multi sensory experience. He has exhibited throughout Ireland and abroad, with his portrait series appearing at Lissadell House, City Assembly House Dublin and the Luan Gallery in Athlone, to name a few. Byrne currently has an exhibition in Lithuania, titled “The Source of the Strength of Two Modern Nations. Lithuania and Ireland in the eyes of an artist”.
